I had pounded out over 600 words about the beer I was reviewing for tonight. It was all done except for placing the images. Two hours of formulating sentences, looking up links for insertion and gathering info. Something happened during a save operation that caused all of that to go away. It was gone. I was livid. I had a sip of beer. I calmed down.
The beer was Sierra Nevada’s Tropical Torpedo which I found at Herman’s in Ottawa. I was wondering just how tropical the beer was. Some brewers have a tendency to go overboard or the other way which is to underwhelm.
Tropical Torpedo was brewed with a combination of four American hops: Mosaic, Citra, El Dorado and Comet. It’s my guess that the El Dorado hops had a lot to do with the final taste of the beer. Also among the ingredients is honey. Another flavor enhancer for beer.
The taste of the beer was damn good and I found that tropical fruitiness was pulled back from those gummy juicy, chewy New England IPAs. Good body and not very bitter (55 IBUs.) Nice medium mouthfeel and the beer coats the inside of the glass with lacing.
Torpedo has been a mainstay beer for SN since its namesake, the hop torpedo was installed at the brewery. Smaller versions of the same device are available to the homebrewer. SN’s hop torpedo infuses hop flavors into the fermenting wort rather than dry hopping. Here’s some info on the device. Here’s one guy’s take on making his own.
Tropical Torpedo is a great summer beer and would be graciously accepted by all who experience the upcoming dog days of August. It would be swilled down in record time and more will be requested. Have plenty on hand and don’t worry about the tropics. What you are feeling when you’re drinking this beer is about as good as it gets.
Sorry about the short length of this missive, but I did spend the money on the beer and I did want you all to know my opinion. (And opinions are like assholes… Yeah, I know.)
The SixPackTech shortened summary for Sierra Nevada Tropical Torpedo IPA:
Taste: Delicious and not very tropical at all.
Smoothness: Easy drinking, like a juicebox of beer.
Bang for the buck: Excellent.
Amount paid: $8.99 for sixpack of 12-ounce bottles.
Get it again? Fer sure.
Wife’s all-encompassing opinion: (Sniff) It’s got a real light citrusy smell. (sip) I don’t get a whole lot. (sip) Just that dry beer taste not much else. (sip) Just your basic beer flavor. (I think she likes it.)
