Rat Rods

Auto Monday

Rat rods from the largest 3-day classic car show in the world! MSRA “Back to the Fifties” 2015. Love ’em or hate ’em, rat rods are here to stay. Some amazing technology can be hidden under all that rust and rivets. Rolling sculptures.

For ten years or so it’s been okay for traditional-style rodders to bag on rat rods for a number of reasons, valid and otherwise. The valid reasons are that many rat rods have been built with halfass construction and little to no safety in mind. Other considerations are the false patina and the glorifying of rust in these builds. Ten years ago we were waiting for this “fad” to be over.

My take is that rat rods can be masterpieces of engineering and interesting to look at,given their limited budgets and lots of handcrafting. Some have evolved into hot rods over the years. I think they are a boon to low-buck builders, and more desireable than the “cookie-cutter” hot rods.
