All about traffic signals

Nice, down to earth video about the inner workings of traffic lights. Including that yellow light you sped up for yesterday.

Now that Winter is upon us, (3″-5″, with another on the way,) it occurs to me that we nearly never used to see snow-covered traffic light lenses.

As many jurisdictions (including the whole state of KY) are converting to LED traffic lights to use less power, it becomes apparent that
    Less Power = Less Heat
and the old incandescents did a great job of melting snow from the lenses, especially that 150-watt red light!

LEDs are too cool. Add a heater, and there go the power savings.
Or, leave ’em as is and deal with a bit of intersectional carnage now and again, eh?

    Environmental Enlightenment, gotta love it!

You bring up a good point.

    Will drivers adapt?

We’ll have to wait and see.

Nice to know the Law of Unintended Consequences hasn’t been repealed, nor have the Laws of Physics.

    Be careful out there.
