Re: oddly named places
Big Bone Lick State Park is in Boone Co, KY, about 25 mi. south of Cincinnati,OH.
The name comes from the many bones found there, the remains of prehistoric animals (mammoths, mastodons, giant sloths and such) who came to lick the minerals and got terminally stuck in the muck. It’s been a significant archeological site since the 18th century, with a number of fossils in Thomas Jefferson’s personal collection.
About 3 miles east of the park is a little town named Beaver Lick.
